big tobacco's latest target,Myanmar

As smoking declines in many developed nations, the tobacco industry is increasingly targeting low-and middle-income countries. The industry's latest target is Myanmar.

" They seem to think by entering the market stealthily, they can avoid public scrutiny," Tin Maung, Myanmar's top tobacco control advocate, told the AP.
As they do in many poorer countries, the tobacco companies are exploiting a need for economic development and weak tobacco control laws to sell more of their deadly and addictive products. Unless countries take strong action, the results is usually higher smoking rates and more tobacco-caused death, disease and economic costs.
" Myanmar gives plenty of room for tobacco companies to focus on targeting the middle class and teenagers with cheap cigarettes" said Mary Assunta, senior policy adviser with the southeast Asia tobacco control alliance.
Myanmar has ratified the international tobacco treaty, the World Health Organization Framework Convention on tobacco control. But the country needs to adopt and enforce the proven measures including higher tobacco taxes, 100 percent smoke-free laws that apply to all workplaces and public bans, large graphic health warnings and bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.Unless the countries make practical measures, smoking will kill one billion people worldwide this century.

journalist Maung Wan Tha died with lung cancer in Myanmar

Myanmar has a population of 60 million and 70% of the people live in the villages while 30% of the people live in towns. Therefore, 18 million people live in cities and towns while 42 million people live in the villages. In the villages in Myanmar, Both males and females smoke apart from the children who are under 12 years old. Therefore, 32 million people who live in the villages smoke and in the cities and towns, 50% of Males smoke apart from the females. Therefore, 8 million people who live in cities and towns smoke. Therefore 40 million people in Myanmar are smoking. Therefore, estimated 66% of Myanmar people are smoking. Myanmar is potential to push for the youths to be smokers unless the advocacy campaign is launched because tobacco companies eye for Myanmar and the price of cigarettes is very cheap as well. Myanmar is the second most cancer-caused country in the world. Recently, the journalist Maung Wan Tha died with lung cancer  at the age of 69.The death of the journalist Maung Wan Tha is a big loss of the country in the democracy transition.
